Chapter 11: Desire

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

And here it is. The final chapter in this series of blog entries.

The original intention was for this chapter to be the absolutely final word on why Desire is being released in both free and paid formats. It was supposed to be a scathing, searing critique of the music industry, succinct and unrepentant in both its communication and its message.

But now, I find myself sitting here, with 2 days to go until the official release of Desire, completely unable to summon even one incendiary sentence. Given that it's taken 12 long months to get to this point, I guess that's not really surprising.

And these things happen to everyone eventually. You get older, you mellow, you find that you have less and less that you need to prove to the world. And actions always speak louder than words.

So, if you're reading this, the best thing to do would be to simply visit the Sounds link on the left, download or buy the album, and listen to the end result.
Of course, if you do happen to have any interest in ascertaining the motivations behind the free release of Desire, you're welcome to peruse the preceding entries.

But personally, I think it's time to mention someone apart from myself. As the liner notes to the album do not have any thanks given to specific people, now seems the ideal time.

And so, here they are.

Tony Cohen for doing such a sterling job with the recording and production of the album, Dave McCluney at Atlantis Sound for doing such a marvelous job with Tony, Fiona Simpson for constant assurances and reassurances which all turned out to be true, to Ian James Keese and Enid Ratnam Keese for perpetual love and support - and especially to Enid Ratnam Keese for the stunning album artwork.

To Sunny Leunig, Andrew Cowie and Phil Smith Major for their outstanding musical talent, friendship and ongoing support, Caerwen Martin, Aaron Barnden and Lauren Segal for handling the strings on the record at short notice and with such skill and sensitivity, John Ruberto at Crystal Mastering for his attention to detail and patience, Deborah Ladd and Emma Harrold at Traffic Design for the beautiful design work and Danny Lay at Xtreemtc for the flawless CD manufacture.
To Greg Berlin, Ben Silbersher, David Sharpe and William Arya for the astonishing website design, structure and coding, thank you.

A special mention to Ashley Sambrooks from Show Off Services for his constant support, encouragement and tireless efforts in the service of our record, many thanks. And, for their (unconscious) inspiration and assistance, Bob Lefsetz and Chris Anderson in the USA, Andrew Dubber in the UK and Matt from Kurb Promo in NZ.

Also, to Richard Martin, Lindsay Phillips, Emilie Pettersen, Andre and Jemima Hooke, James and Andrew Bonnici, Kathryn Anderton, Heidi Barrett, Jade Arnott and especially to Rose, Barnaby and Flo Smith Major for all their kindness and support.
To all our friends in Melbourne and my old friends in Sydney, to anyone else I've forgotten (my apologies) and last, but never least, heartfelt thanks to Amaya - for everything.
